Most of the design is great. As others have pointed out, the clamp material is an issue. On a C172S yoke shaft, the clamp has issues with being able to easily slip and rotate around the yoke if not put on really tight. After only two weeks, the plastic lever that is supposed to lock the clamp down has snapped, making it now unusable. With the amount of stress the part has to endure in order for the arm to not slip and rotate around the yoke shaft, being made of plastic is not a great design choice. Almost all of the rest of the flex clamp is made of metal...
I fly the N model for the 172. This mount works fine with the 172N. The reason I docked it two stars is because of the quality of the clamp being plastic and when I tighten the clamp screw and secure the iPad Mini 7 to the yoke, it was fairly easy to ‘bump’ it and make it loose.
It works perfectly on my Piper Cherokee 180. I like that I can position it under the yoke without covering the steam gauges in front of me. Well-made product!
Fits my C-T210 yoke like a glove. I mount it under the shaft rather than above as advertised. It keeps my Ipad lower and out of the way of the panel. It doesn't ride low enough to touch my legs either. The swivel function is so effortless too. I cruise with it in landscape mode and on approach I just flip it to portrait and my Plates fill the screen as they should.
Granted it's one of the more expensive ones on the market but I must say, it's worth every penny.
The reciever circle - metal.
The adjustable hand - metal.
The connection socket - metal.
The clamp - plastic.
Seriously, the most important piece is made out of plastic. For a $150 piece of equipment I find this unacceptable. Not only it's plastic, it's also poorly designed. You're supposed to tighten it with this little plastic tab that swivels up and you spin it and spin it and then you're supposed to drop this tab down, to lock it down. But the tab adds additional tension, so in most cases you need to pull the tab back up and loosen the clamp a bit then try again. Then you realize you've loosen it up too much, so you have tightening it up a bit then try again. Sometimes you do this over and over again.
So sum it up - the clamping system on this thing is just bad.
Also, I've found that even when tightened down, I can still pretty easily get it to loosen up or rotate around the tubing. I have no idea why don't they just include a normal metal clamp with a butterfly type screw. Basically the same thing that's on the handle itself. Once you tighten those down, they're not going anywhere and there's no guesswork involve - screw it tightly and that's it.
The rest of the system is wonderful. The quick release is amazing, allowing you to unlock your tablet and take it down from the mount instantly. So good. So useful. So well designed. The swivel hand is very good. Strong. Sturdy. Flexible mounting options.
But the clamp sucks and I will now have to buy a better clamp and replace the original one. Normally I wouldn't be this harsh and demanding, but with a $150 price tag I expected everything to be top notch.
Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to write up this review. We have tried other clamps, but found the current clamp to be the most versatile option available across all applications. We do have some metal aircraft specific mounts available depending on the aircraft that you fly.
Thank you,
